Sex and discipline: How gender and specialty interact in the Faculty of Science

This project follows from the successful 2004 School of Physics Equity Initiatives project. The research is conducted in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) and the School of Psychology as they are of a similar size and represent two ends of the spectrum within the Faculty of Science. Quantitative as well as qualitative data were gathered. The former are collected mainly through school and university databases, the latter by surveying staff and senior students. The project is designed to investigate

- Academic gender profiles

- Academic activities

- Overt and hidden workloads and

- Research output relative to gender and academic levels.

The study compares the three schools (Psychology, BEES and Physics) and provides recommendations on how to promote the academic advancement of women.
